Kayo Takuma Seminar

In my seminar, we approach the question of how to address global issues such as infectious diseases and trade in an increasingly fragmented international society through literature reading, situational analysis, and in-depth discussion.

Due to rising international interdependence, global challenges such as climate change, migration, infectious diseases, and trade are piling up. Even in the absence of a world government, robust efforts to tackle global issues have been sustained through international organizations and frameworks for international cooperation, or through the leadership of a hegemon, as the United States once was. But what is the situation today? With the rise of "my country first" policies in various nations and the emergence of public opinion negative toward international cooperation, many international organizations have been forced to restructure, and the environment surrounding international cooperation has clearly deteriorated. In this difficult situation, we analyze and discuss the current state of global governance from various perspectives, including how to confront global issues, what attempts are being made in various fields, and what Japan can do.

A characteristic of the Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Law at Keio University is that students belong to a single seminar for two years during their third and fourth years to engage in continuous learning. Students develop deep connections across grade levels, and I hope that learning in my seminar will be useful for cultivating deep knowledge and thinking skills regarding global governance, as well as for gaining lifelong friends.
